The treadmill was a great way to get back into walking longer and longer distances.   When I first started, I could walk for only about two minutes before the pain became unbearable - knowing that number was very eye-opening.  As I improved, it became incredibly motivating to watch the amount of time I could walk get longer and longer. 

 

The controlled environment of treadmill was in some ways more comfortable than walking outside (though I liked that too) because I never had to worry about someone being in the way, bumping into me, or not finding a seat when I needed one.  The treadmill also let me focus in on my posture and using both legs equally - rather than relying on the one without sciatica.  I used the treadmill time as a time to train myself to use better, more natural posture while walking.
