After lying in bed for so long, it wasn't just my leg and back muscles that were weak - my upper body needed help too. 

 

I talked to the PT early on about doing upper extremity exercises and did a bunch of stuff with the exercise equipment at our gym.  I focused on weight lifting machines and weight exercises I could use while lying on my back or stomach, but also did some in a sitting or standing posture.

 

Unlike with my lower body, where all the exercise I was doing was going into just rebuilding the atrophied muscle, with the upper body I was able to rebuild the muscle fairly quickly and as I continued exercise, I began to develop some nice, well-defined upper body muscles.   My upper body became the one area of my body that I could really feel great about as I continued to exercise and rebuild strength.
